Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Workdays
A great way to get involved! We will need volunteers to help prepare firebreaks around prescribed burn units. Activities will include cutting new firebreaks and cleaning/raking existing firebreaks at Sam’s Point Preserve to remove leaves and other accumulated debris. We will be
looking for about 10-15 people to help out for 4-6
hours each day. No prior experience necessary.

NO WORKDAYS SCHEDULED AT THIS TIME.

Prescribed Burn Crews
Get onto the fireline! Volunteers are also needed to work as crew members in prescribed burning
operations. Basic wildland firefighter training and a physical fitness test are required for all those who wish to participate in prescribed burns. Training entails about 40 hours of course and field work and is offered locally by The Nature Conservancy and the NY Department of Environmental Conservation. In
addition to these courses, you must also pass a physical fitness test before participating in a prescribed
burn. This test consists of carrying a 45 lb. pack for 3 miles over level terrain in 45 minutes or less.
